Is shot peening and shot blasting process same?

Shot peening is a process widely used to increase the life(fatigue) of an object by inducing compressive stresses on the surface.The word peen means to strengthen. This is a cold working process.

On the other hand shot blasting is primiraly used to clean the surface of a material. Eg. Steel or concrete. It will remove a fine layer of material on which the shots are blasted to expose unaffected stain free surface beneath. But it worth noting that shot blasting can also improve the strength of the material.
